Review – HanCock(y)

When Will Smith releases a movie, we all sit up and notice. Apart from the Wild Wild West, the fresh prince of Hollywood has been havings hits after enjoyable hits . Hes got a bit of Denzel looks (and a smaller bit of  the acting), some of Chris Tucker motor mouth (but not too much) and some Wesley Snipes action appeal. He is the perfect leading man as of Today – with no conroversies too. And this time he comes back with an unconventional script ( I ,Robot, -I am Legend…) on a super hero who drinks too much, fumbles his timing, hits on women (!) and generally acts like a ….(Dont call him that !!!) but you need to see the movie at this point.

Charlize Theron is great as the sceptical wife of the Public Relations executive who tries to clean up the man.The move is both a spoof on action heroes and an action hero movie at the same time.Memorable scenes include a drunk and flying John Hancock (well Superman never drank !!) chasing bad guys, a super villian (!) and prison scenes. Enough said. The movie strikes you for the realistic special effects (yes it looks like he is actually flying not swinging by a rope )…and great lovely Will Smith cocky humour.

Watch the movie– its gonna be a cool cool summer and the action heroes are coming back. Bring Em On.

Dear Google

Google.com has added its privacy policy to the main page to conform with California law. Here is a question to the masters of the algorithm that I sent to their query system ”

Dear Google ,

I understand that IP Addresses are stored routinely by you, that these IP addresses can be used as unique keys for analytical purposes, but also be used for identifying and locating privacy of people (like in China) with disproportionate technical effort. Why don’t you run a randomizing algorithm that masks the IP addresses but keeps the uniqueness factor alive, and delete the original IP addresses, thus sparing yourself any privacy concerns. The algorithm should be made in a manner that any masked unique  IP number cannot be unmasked , and all same IP addresses have same masked IP addresses. You retain analytical value, consumers retain privacy and we settle this debate once and for all.”
This is in response to its slightly biased privacy policy whose fine print is here ”

Data integrity

Google processes personal information only for the purposes for which it was collected and in accordance with this Policy or any applicable service-specific privacy notice. We review our data collection, storage and processing practices to ensure that we only collect, store and process the personal information needed to provide or improve our services. We take reasonable steps to ensure that the personal information we process is accurate, complete, and current, but we depend on our users to update or correct their personal information whenever necessary.

Accessing and updating personal information

When you use Google services, we make good faith efforts to provide you with access to your personal information and either to correct this data if it is inaccurate or to delete such data at your request if it is not otherwise required to be retained by law or for legitimate business purposes. We ask individual users to identify themselves and the information requested to be accessed, corrected or removed before processing such requests, and we may decline to process requests that are unreasonably repetitive or systematic,  require disproportionate technical effort , jeopardize the privacy of others, or would be extremely impractical (for instance, requests concerning information residing on backup tapes), or for which access is not otherwise required. In any case where we provide information access and correction, we perform this service free of charge, except if doing so would require a disproportionate effort. Some of our services have different procedures to access, correct or delete users’ personal information. We provide the details for these procedures in the specific privacy notices or FAQs for these services.”

This leaves enough loopholes for Google to pick and choose its privacy policy AND its response. Nice spin, but people understanding law, public relations, databases AND algorithms do exist in the non Google world. The New York Times blog “Bits”: is at the forefront. And its a very good blog for all tech news besides the renowned mashable (www.mashable.com) and Silicon Valley Insider (www.alleyinsider.com)

Review:Iron(ic) Man

Review:Iron(ic) Man 2008

And what would you call a movie thats part loveable Marvel hero, part James Bond humor and part brilliant casting coups. As for this year, uptil now you can call it Iron Man. While The Dark Knight, or even the soon awaited Will Smith ….starring Hancock may soon be the top grossing comic super hero based movie grosser,

this one tugs at your heart, the corner of your lips and your eyes.

Yeah Baby!

Iron man stars a billionaire playboy ,sardonic, sometimes comically ironic , and reformed arms dealer Tony Stark …………played ironically by a reformed and still twinkling eyed Robert Downey Jr).Stark after a series of unfortunate events in Afghan caves decides brilliant minds ,and corporate money can be better put to use than corporate wars and weapons design.

Yes small and subtle war messages even in mainstream movies nowadays, but the chemistry between the Stark and Miss Potts (played by a still so lovely, and where have you been Mrs Coldplay……Gwenyth Paltrow) is remarkable.. and so are the movie effects, The computer generated imagery is so good .. it seems as if not generated by computers.

Watch it with your family, kids, your love, or with your college mates. This is Hollywood at it’s entertaining best !!!

Review -Bollywood Version of Godfather2 :Sarkar Raj

Okay , its not as good as Sarkar , the original “tribute” to Copolla’s classic Godfather by the maverick down again , up again desi Tarintino ,Ram Gopal Verma (who returns as director ). But thats true even of Godfather 2, and most sequels .

The good news – it is good enough for fans of pulp fiction style, violence ,strategy and intelligent movies. All and out a guy’s movie, Sarkar Raj is faster, bloodier , resorts to more camera tricks as if RGV is trying to prove something, and by the end of the movie he proves why he is the best director of violent Bollywood movies in the past two decades.

A stellar star cast by India ‘s first family of acting, sees a violent and overweight Abhishek Bachhan playing Shanker “Remorseless” Nagre, Aishwarya Rai Bachhan playing beautiful ,and unwitting trap for him, and Amitabh as the aging and still defiant patriach. With a few hints to the Enron power project in Maharashtra , some classic Marathi pandering and even bold Thackeray family like hints (including the suffix “Raj” .)…this one is for you to go with your beer drinking buddies alone…… and enjoy. Definitely paisa wasool (thats value for money in Hindi) for a watch, and go with the subtitles version …it works equally well.

Outsourcing Analytics:Maintaining Quality

1 use an instant messenger like skype so people dont exchange too many emails and can clarify things in a two minute call

2 stick to SLAs. if someone didnt design the SLA ‘s correctly have weekly metrics report. weekly team meetings and monthly higher up review meetings help.

3 Insist on offshore quality management like ISO 9001 or Green Belt, which are the default in It services.

4 insist on an attrition or team retention clause in your SLA. team members leaving will be biggest drop in your quality.

5 Have once a year on site trips . helps the training and the bonding too. its cheaper for off shore team members to fly on site , because the have lower actual costs.

6 have penalty clauses in SLA, insist on free credits for missed deadlines or bad quality project, its only fair..

7 always have an exit clause which specifies that offshore vendor will pay for transitioning process to newer member and have a liability clause too, its mostly taken care by their insurance company

8 Having a wiki helps in documentation , insist on all codes, logs to be sent to you with comments so as to review how the project was completed rather than only when something is wrong

9 trust in god, but lock your vendor’s contract
